A distraught Tiger Woods was at a lost to figure out what's wrong with his golf game at this stage in his career. He calls his response "angry" which is not a scientific or reasoned assessment of what's wrong , and why he cannot completely figure out a way capture his form.
Maybe this is a good way to hide the knowledge of his decline from his investors or fans. Maybe he does not know or believe his game is in decline. But having his game fall into inevitable decline is not necessarily an extremely a bad thing. It's understanding where is the "fault line" and managing a process around it that will be the challenge.
Let's have a reasoned assessment of Tiger's game in his heyday. Tiger's golf approach was built on his talent of striking the golf ball with timing in his swing and delightful confidence. It is a confidence to do what ever his eyes saw as a necessary play. Many golf commentators think that his main strength was his swing , I think it was his mental control , his ability to stay on point, to stay with what was necessary throughout the duration of a tournament. It's a very difficult process to engage in because it means that if he moves mentally outside the rails he could end up like he did yesterday...making bad shots, very bad shots.
The downside of this tough mental process is the stress it causes. It was this uninterrupted stress that encouraged Tiger to seek refuge in the clubs and high price resorts with "friends" to get some down time to relieve the impact of such a long time playing the game super focused.
The 93rd PGA CHAMPIONSHIP in Atlanta, Georgia was a case study, to prove my point. Tiger's first round score ended up being +7 after he started off at -3 within the first few holes he played.. He decided to release his hold on his ironclad focus that made him a ruthlessly efficient golfer. Many golfers both old and young were for a long time critical Tiger's
When you add the obviously physical decline( which will happen naturally) of his body..due to wear and tear...his in ability to train continuously for long periods and the stress of maintaining his focus emphatically as is necessary, we see Tiger's game fall apart dramatically.
In these circumstances Tiger Woods has to redesign a whole new approach with attainable goals. In my opinion he has to pragmatically have golf as his main focus for at least the next five years. Even as his children is the pillar of his life ..he must still have the mental tightness as his method of keeping his game an integral part of his lifestyle,as he did for the first ten years of his professional life. This is if he wants to maintain his high standard and gather as much Major wins as Jack Nichlaus.
